BOOKS BY JOAN

I teach voice and music theory. First, I tell my students that music is not the notes, but the SPACE BETWEEN THE NOTES. I tell them that music is not about singing and playing instruments but knowing how to listen. The first thing I do is LISTEN to the student sing. Most people think they cannot sing, but I assure them that we all can sing. The problem is we all don’t know how to LISTEN. I have to get them to CHANGE THEIR MIND about what singing is. I tell them not to concentrate on impressing others with their beautiful voice, but to understand that as a singer, you are a messenger, so it is important how you impart the message.

This is so with all knowledge and learning. The message is the important thing. So, we can only teach others by listening to them to find out what message they need to receive. Therefore, we TEACH by being CHANNELS of the Universe for other people.

JOAN CARTWRIGHT teaches Voice and Music

Dear Joan,
This is lovely, it is very important that the students understand that singing is about sharing and giving, not "look at me, look at me" and only then can you touch your audience.
